As you know, we've been traveling for years and we've done all kinds of trips. And one of the biggest secrets that has allowed us to travel so often over the years is this: make smart management with the money we spend traveling! Nowadays, travel does not have to be as expensive as many people still think. Below, we leave you our best money-saving tips for your next adventure:
SEARCH FOR FREE ACTIVITIES
When you visit a new destination, you want to know its culture, its history, its traditions. But that sometimes quickly weighs on the travel budget. Fortunately, there are many alternatives nowadays so you can meet a new destination without "busting" your bank account! Look for free guided tours, walks, open museum days and many more possibilities to discover a new destination at zero cost.
BOOK A ROOM / APARTMENT WITH MICROWAVE / KITCHENETTE
One of the easiest ways to spend money on a trip is with meals. We all have to eat (of course!) And restaurants (especially in the most touristy destinations) sometimes take advantage of it. To save some more, book a room or apartment with a kitchenette and have some of your meals at home. It takes a little more work, but it pays off in the final budget no doubt!
DON'T EAT AT RESTAURANTS IN TOURIST ZONES
When you have to eat on the street (or simply want to enjoy a romantic dinner during your trip) do not do so in the most touristy areas of your destination. Prices will most likely be inflated here and restaurants will be fuller which may affect the quality of service and food.
SHOP ON LOCAL MINI MARKETS
In addition to meals, of course they will have to snack as well throughout the day. Shop for fruit, snacks and beverages in local mini markets rather than shops in more touristy areas. It will be much more affordable for you!
USE POINTS OR MILES PROGRAMS
If you travel frequently, be aware of hotel point programs or frequent flyer programs with the airlines you use the most. Over time, you can enjoy great discounts or free upgrades on your travels!
BE FLEXIBLE WITH FLIGHT DATES / HOURS
As we have explained here, this is one of the simplest ways to save on one of the main costs of your trip: flights. If you can be flexible with your travel dates and times, you'll be able to find huge discounts and save a lot on your travel budget!
TRAVEL DURING THE LOW SEASON
This tip is not always ideal, but it is always something to consider. Sometimes simply avoiding peak seasons such as Easter, Summer, Christmas and New Year holidays can make a huge difference to your budget. That's how we did it in the Maldives for example and we saved a lot of money!
MAKE A BUDGET AND BUY A TRAVEL INSURANCE
Above all, the golden rule is this: make a budget before you travel and then follow it as much as possible! To avoid major budget deviations you have created, take out travel insurance because travel insurance is there to ensure you enjoy every second of your trip worry-free. (We offer 5% discount on IATI travel insurance, see below for all information).
